If you like Eastern Europe rhythms and Balkan music with funny guitar sound, Figli Di Madre Ignota will be an exciting band for you. They describe their music as Spaghetti Balkan. They really have a unique sound that elements of Balkan music, klezmer, polka and the other eastern and middle Europe fused with modern elements successfully. I could say that they reflect Italian energy to their music. You could hear hot guitar riffs and Balkan brass rhythms with funny vocals. Click here to listen some of their songs.

0

la-mano-ajena-gypsy-balkan-klezmer-from-chileToday, I would like to introduce a band from Chile. I really enjoy writing this blog that I met some musicians. Last week I met The Freak Fandango Orchestra from Spain and wrote about them. This week I met with an interesting and funny band La Mano Ajena from Chile. After I heard their music, I fell in love with their songs. Their eclectic and hybrid sound fuses Eastern Europe sound like Balkan music, gypsy music, klezmer and jazz manouche with Latin music elements like cha-cha-cha, cumbia, mambo, rumba and tango. You also could hear rock rhythms in some of their songs. I like bands perform Balkan and gypsy music, nonetheless their musical diversity is very good that they combine European and Latin sound successfully. I have added four songs from their three albums. I believe that you will enjoy hearing La Mano Ajena’s unique music and hybrid sound. You could listen and buy their albums from their website.

La Mano Ajena consists of seven multi instrumentalist musicians. Instrumental variety setup well that you hear typical Balkan music, modern music and Latin music instruments together. Saxophone, guitar, piccolo flute, keyboard, theremin, melodica, violin, marimba, accordion, clarinet, drums, darbuka and djembe, bass and double bass are leading instruments we could hear in their music. Although lyrics are generally in Spanish, it is possible to find some lyrics in Yiddish, Hebrew, French and English. I suggest them using some Turkish and Greek instruments to enhance their musical variety and diversity, although their musical diversity is perfect.

La Mano Ajena joined many concerts in some countries like Spain, Denmark, Serbia, and Argentina. They shared the stage with Emir Kusturica and The No Smoking Orchestra and Gogol Bordello. In 2008, Emir Kusturica and The No Smoking Orchestra asked them to join their show in Santiago. After this performance, Emir Kusturica invited them to participate in Kustendorf Film Festival held in Serbia. La Mano Ajena was the first and only one group joined the festival from Latin America. They were invited once again to share the stage with Emir Emir Kusturica and The No Smoking Orchestra in 2009. The band will be on tour in Europe in July 2012. I hope they could come to Turkey with my favorite director Emir Kusturica and his band The No Smoking Orchestra.

Fanfare Ciocarlia: Legends of Balkan Music and Gypsy Brass Bands

0

fanfare-ciocarlia-balkan-mus-baro-biaoFanfare Ciocarlia is gypsy brass band legends. Balkan Music is my favorite genre that I wrote posts about musician side of Emir Kusturica and Taraf de Haidouks. Today, would like to write about another Balkan Music legend, Fanfare Ciocarlia. The band consists of 12 funny gypsy musicians from Romania. They do not perform ordinary gypsy music like many groups. They perform gypsy music with the other styles like flamenco, tango, rock and so on. Fanfare Ciocarlia is world music’s happy face that they carried gypsy brass band music to higher levels. German music producer Henry Ernst visits their village in Romania and convinces them to become a touring band. Since they discovered by Ernst, they played in many concerts in many countries from Australia to America.

This video crated with Creative Commons License. It is not a subject of copyright.

Brass band music is one of the most important elements of Balkan Music and gypsy music. It takes very important place in Balkan countries, especially in weddings and funerals. We saw Fanfare Ciocarlia in Underground the Emir Kusturica movie. Emir Kusturica means mobile music and it was a good choice to work with Goran Bregovic and Fanfare Ciocarlia in this project. They appeared as walking and playing brass band in the movie. They say that Balkan brass music was affected by Turkish army music that they also use some elements from Turkish, Bulgarian, Serbian, and Macedonian music, although they perform Romanian folk music. The band’s lineup includes trumpets, tenor and baritone horns, tubas, clarinets, saxophones, bass drum and percussion. Speed is their nature that some musicians could reach 200 beats per minute. Virtuosity and diversity make Fanfare Ciocarlia different from the others. Lyrics are in Romanian or Romani languages.

Live performance is the best way to determine a group’s musicality. I could say Fanfare Ciocarlia is the monster of live performance. I have watched their videos many times. I also had an opportunity see them in Istanbul in 2008. Improvisation, harmony, virtuosity and speed of instruments are perfect in their live performance. They discovered the world again and played in more than 1200 concerts in many countries. A gypsy brass band became a worldwide music group. In 2006, they won BBC Radio 3 World Music Award.

fanfare-ciocarlia-and-boban-markovic-orkestar

Kultur Shock: Gypsy music meets Punk and Rock

0

Have you ever heard anything about gypsy punk? When I heard this style, it made me feel very good. I like gypsy music that I will introduce some gypsy bands in my next posts. Absolutely, it is not pure and noisy punk music, and we can find some rock elements. It makes this kind of music better and listenable. There are some good gypsy punk bands like Kultur Shock, Gogol Bordello, Russkaja, Visa and so on. Today, we will talk about very funny and interesting group Kultur Shock.

kultur-shock-balkan-gypsy-punk-music

It is Seattle based gypsy punk group. Kultur Shock members are immigrants come from different countries such as Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the United States, Indonesia, and Japan. Lyrics are concerned with immigrants’ problems like integration, having job, and so on. They describe themselves as a live band of blue-collar immigrants. Actually, Japan seems a bit freak among those countries, but there are some Japanese groups perform gypsy music.

This video has been created with Creative Commons License.

Their music is rock music integrated Balkan Music. If you like Balkan Music, you will like Kultur Shock. Songs are rearranged Balkan Folk songs, and lyrics are written for immigrants’ problems. Oriental elements are also used in their music. The band’s musical lineup consists of violin, tabor, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, drum, bass, and electric guitar mainly.

Their first album is a concert album released in 1999. In 2001, they released Fucc the Ins album. In my humble opinion, this album is the best album of the group. It is extremely recommended album. Buy it and listen. You will never feel regret. Mastika, Backdoor Boyz, and Nadjia are my favorite songs in the album. How to Fucc Songs and Irritate Musicians is the best performance in the album.

In 2004, Kultura Diktatura album was released. It is very funny album and highly recommended. We could see the group’s improvements in music very well. Tutti Frutti, Mustafa, Hashishi, and Too Late to Fornicate songs are attractive songs of the album.

In 2006, new album We Came to Take Your Jobs Away was released. Kultur Shock improves their music year by year. Do not forget to listen God is Busy, May I Help You?, Istanbul, Tango la Victoire, and Sarajevo. You could find their album and songs on their website.

In 2007, the group released a live album named in Live in Europe. After that, Integration album was released in 2009. Instruments’ harmonies, lyrics quality, integration of local elements are very successful. Balcchanalia, Country Mohhamed, King for Today songs must be listened. Gore Gore! It is the best song in the album and it can make you a bit sad.

In this year, 2011, their last album Ministry of Kultur was released. Although it is a very good album technically, we expect better albums form Kultur Shock. Revolutionary Song, She Works in a Coal Mine, Choko Ko Ko and Don't Shoot Me are the most listenable songs in the album.

Emir Kusturica and The No Smoking Orchestra: Soundtracks from Balkan movies

0

Emir KusturicaI hope you know Emir Kusturica from his movies. Actually, I believe that Emir Kusturica means music. We will discover his magical music world and know more about Balkan Music. I can say there are three directors who choose soundtracks perfectly. Who are they? You are right that they are Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick, and Emir Kusturica. Emir is a bit different from the others. He makes his soundtracks himself. I want to talk about Emir’s funny band in this article. It is Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra that it will be called as TNSO from now on.

TNSO was a rock band in former Yugoslavia named in Zabranjeno Pusenje. Emir used to play bass and guitar in this band. Actually, it was an ordinary rock band in 80’s, but vocalist Nelle Karajilic and Emir Kusturica made the band as a jam band. We can watch their funny live sessions from their DVD's. The group consists of 12 persons and some dancers. Emir plays bass and Emir’s son Stribor plays drums.

When we talked about Emir Kusturica movies and soundtracks, we remembered Goran Bregovic. Underground and Time of Gypsies soundtracks are masterpieces of Goran. In 1998, Emir’s new movie Black Cat, White Cat was released and we met TNSO. We expected a Goran Bregovic album, but Emir used his own very colorful and funny band. We can say Black Cat, White Cat is a Balkan Music album but it’s not a typical Balkan album or world music album like all TNSO albums. You can find everything in this music from Rock to Techno. Local music is combined with modern world music perfectly. For example, Daddy, Don't Ever Dye on a Friday is a typical Balkan song at the same time it’s a rock song. Black Cat White Cat, Bubamara and Duj Sandle are fascinating songs in this album.

In the beginning of millennium, the No Smoking Orchestra released new album named in Unza Unza Time. It is a good suggestion to understand their music. I can say that it is a masterpiece. Unza Unza Time, Devil in the Business Class, Pit-bull Terrier and Drang Nach Osten songs must be listened. You will never feel regret because of listening this album.

unza-unza-time-albumTNSO did not make any album for four years. In 2004, Emir’s new movie, When Life Was a Miracle had been shown. So, we missed TNSO and heard them in this movie. Their music is getting mature year by year. This soundtrack album is also suggested. Actually all albums are suggested. Because, you feel very good when, you hear their music. Anyway, let’s see some suggestion from this album. You can find their video clips on some video websites. Wanted Man, Who Killed the DJ, When Life is a Miracle, and Moldovian songs are extremely suggested songs. In 2005, they also released this album as a live album. You should watch it to hear funny songs and see colorful live show.

the-no-smoking-band-nelle-karajilicIn 2007, TNSO released their one of the best of albums Punk Opera Time of the Gypsies. I cannot find any words to describe this album. They really carried Balkan Music to a new platform. Some songs in Time of Gypsies Soundtrack are rearranged and released in this album together with some new songs. A big orchestra plays with TNSO. It is a perfect Balkan opera. Lorenzo, Evropa, Hederlezi, and Perhan Sovel songs are suggested. At least listen them on a video website. This album also released as DVD. You will see a theatre and opera at the same time. Beautiful songs, significant lyrics, wonderful shows, and interesting dances will fascinate you in the DVD.

They also have a Best Of album. Maybe, it could be a good choice to understand their music. Give an opportunity to TNSO. You will never feel regret to listen them. They deserve your interest. Buy their albums to support. I believe that TNSO will make reputable albums and shows. You could visit TNSO’s website link has given below. You could get more information about TNSO and Emir Kusturica.

Bye for now.
